Blue Slip on an old bike
Having gone through a blue slip on a modified bike before I am going to get the stock bike registered first before starting the project. There have been a significant number of changes to the ADR over the past 37 years and it'll be interesting to see if the mechanics have any idea...
Australia has 3 editions of the ADR:
First Edition - Was generated as a draft for comment but never registered
Second Edition - Was registered in 1969 and applies until 1988. The regulations on motorcyles were very light. There are a few updates through the years (mostly in 1975 and 1985), most significantly around noise.
Third edition - Basically forms the current standards. There have been numerous amendments through the years.
As the bike was manufactured in 1981, only the ADR that were current in 1981 can be applied to when registering the bike.
As far as I can tell, the ADR that apply generally to motorcycles manufactured in 1981 are:
7 - Brakes (infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/pdf/07.pdf)
9 - Automatic transmissions (not applicable to this bike)
28 - Noise (infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/pdf/28.pdf)
30 - Diesel emissions (not applicable to this bike)
33 - Brakes (infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/pdf/33.pdf)
(Source: infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/NCOP10_Section_LO_ADRs_ICVs_1Jan2011_v2.pdf)
A couple of interesting notes:
Brakes: The brake lines must be marked with the manufacturer
Noise: 86dB(A) in a rolling test (2nd gear, full throttle) at a distance of 7.5m perpendicular to the microphone. There are no requirements for markings on the exhaust or a test certificate attached to the bike.
There are also a few (non-dated) guidelines, but these are overruled by the ADR applicable:
Guidelines for Modification of motorcycles:

Number plates:
www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roads/safety-rules/standards/vsi-58-number-plate-visibility.pdf
Otherwise it seems that the simple things need to be done (headlight, indicators, horn, etc.), as they were installed when the bike was manufactured. My bike only has 1 rear view mirror and doesn't appear to have any mounting location for another.
And ... it passed. Time to start Stage 1 - Weight reduction.
